Flexport.org is the dedicated sustainability and social impact team within Flexport. The team transports humanitarian aid to people and places in need, and builds climate programs to decarbonize the logistics industry. We use technology to support both objectives.

In this role, you will be the sole engineer for Flexport.org. You will support existing products and build new ones that leverage Flexport’s platform to make a real-world impact, such as reducing global carbon emissions, empowering nonprofits to deliver aid effectively and product donation matching. If you are passionate about using technology and data to drive humanitarian and environmental impact, you’ve found your home. Come prove software engineers can save the world one line of code at a time.

This position reports into the Trade Services Team in Amsterdam and will cross-train with other smaller engineering teams for code-reviews and on-call support. The position will work closely with Flexport.org leadership in the United States, which will require working US-friendly hours at least once per week.

You will:

  • Lead the design and development of complex software systems, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance.
  • Build new full stack products that power Flexport.org initiatives, such as sustainable routing optimization within our freight network.
  • Support existing products and integrations, such as our freight emissions calculator and fund management system, by crushing bugs in a timely manner, and looking for opportunities to make things run faster and smoother.
  • Work closely with business partners to distill complex business problems into elegant technical solutions.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code following best practices and coding standards.

You should have:

  • 5+ years experience writing software and a strong engineering background.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture principles and design patterns.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Node.js, TypeScript, Ruby, Java and RDBMS (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • A love of simple, well-tested code that is easy to extend and hard to break.
  • Ability to convey technical ideas in common terms to business stakeholders, product managers, and engineers alike, in both written and verbal terms.
  • A self-starter attitude. When you see a problem, you solve it. You might not have a PM or UX at your disposal so you’ll need to be able to figure things out yourself from time to time.
  • A passion for sustainability and/or humanitarian aid. It’s why we’re here!

Our stack:

Our continuous releases are integrated with Buildkite and Github. On the frontend, we use React for the views, fetch data with GraphQL/Relay, and test our application with Jest. On the backend, we’re a Rails shop riding on AWS and Postgres RDS. Our staging server infrastructure is written in Python.

How we work:

  • We come to the office at two to three times a week to hang out, have lunch, white board, and collaborate.
  • We have the latest and greatest hardware and software for you to work with.
  • We’re agile, but not married to a single doctrine like scrum. The teams decide how they work best.
  • Stack: we’re coming from a React/Flow + Ruby on Rails monolith, and moving to React/Typescript, Kotlin Microservices on Kubernetes. We also use and love GraphQL, GRPC, Postgres, Kafka and Snowflake.

Other perks:

  • Incredible stock option plan (RSUs), that has tremendous growth potential.
  • Yearly bonus: a yearly bonus of ~ 10% of your base salary.
  • Free breakfast and lunch/snacks: there is such a thing as free lunch.
  • Fully covered health insurance and dental care.
  • Pension plan.
