Senior Software Engineer – Compliance Tech in Renewable Fuels

FuelFWD is a fast-moving Rotterdam-based startup building the next generation of compliance tools for the renewable fuels industry. Our platform is purpose-built to turn complexity into clarity — merging simplicity of design with the robustness our customers and their auditors demand. We're a small team with big traction, and we’re growing fast.

We’re now looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help us scale our product and engineering capacity. This is a hands-on, high-impact role — ideal for someone who thrives in early-stage environments and believes in building systems that are elegant, simple, and durable.

Your Role

As a Senior Engineer at FuelFWD, you will be a critical contributor to both the day-to-day development and the strategic evolution of our platform. You'll collaborate closely with our co-founders and engineering peers to:

Build and Improve

• Design and implement new features that make regulatory workflows intuitive and scalable.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and fix issues across the stack — from frontend UX to backend performance.
• Regularly review code with peers, contribute to setting high-quality standards, and evolve our architecture.

Own and Operate

• Help shape and maintain our cloud infrastructure and deployment pipelines.
• Monitor and improve performance, reliability, and developer ergonomics.
• Co-own our devops practices and help scale them with the team.

Contribute Strategically

• Identify opportunities to simplify or rethink how we solve core compliance challenges.
• Bring a systems mindset and a product eye — not just executing tickets, but making the platform better by design.
• Actively propose and lead technical initiatives to keep our tech stack modern, clean, and resilient.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who combines technical excellence with humility, openness, and drive:

• You are hands-on — not just managing or architecting, but writing real code daily.
• You value simplicity — you seek elegant solutions and avoid unnecessary complexity.
• You have strong opinions, loosely held — you’re not afraid to push for better, but always listen and adapt.
• You’re thoughtful with people — you foster trust, give credit, and build others up.
• You think strategically — you look beyond the task and connect it to the bigger picture.
• You’re based in the Netherlands — or willing to relocate (from within Europe).

Must-haves:

• 5+ years of experience building and shipping web applications.
• Proven ability to work across a modern tech stack (frontend, backend, infra).
• Strong track record of collaboration in small, agile teams.

Nice-to-haves:

• Experience leading teams or mentoring peers.
• Background in compliance or regulatory-heavy products.
• DevOps skills — from CI/CD to infrastructure-as-code.
• Contributions to open source or authorship of technical content.
• Entrepreneurial mindset — you’re biased to build, test, and iterate.
